What is the Preferred Colour for New Cars in the UK?

For five years in a row now, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has reported that grey remains the most popular hue for new cars in the UK.

It was revealed that in 2022, 25.7% of UK vehicle purchasers opted for the same colour when selecting their new car.

Last year, the number of grey cars registered in total was 415,199, rising by 1.7%.

The UK experienced a strong preference for the colour grey in all of its regions and counties, except for the Scottish Borders where blue was the most popular colour. Grey was the runner-up in this area.

The study showed that in the United Kingdom in 2022, almost two-thirds of newly purchased cars were painted either grey, black, or white.

In 2022, silver only saw 98,483 units sold, making up for a 6.1% market share.

The car had been in either the 1st or 2nd spot as far as consumer preference was concerned for 12 years running from 2000 to 2011, thus resulting in its lowest ranking in over 20 years last year.

In the fifth spot, Red saw a reduction in its market share to the smallest it has been since 2008. This was evidenced by 136,793 units registered, which accounted for 8.5 percent of all cars.

The figures from the SMMT revealed the colours of new cars that are least popular in Britain.

Last year, registrations for maroon, pink, and cream were less than 1% of the total.

In terms of less common shades, orange, yellow, bronze, turquoise and mauve experienced a surge in sales, albeit only comprising 3.4% of the market total and bringing in 55,401 units in 2022.

  • At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022, BMW has unveiled their new colour-changing car.
  • Car depreciation is affected by a variety of factors, including the colour of the car.
  • Statistics show that new car sales have hit a 30-year low, but electric vehicles are now the second most popular type of car, only behind petrol cars.

The SMMT reported that green car sales had attained their highest level in over a decade and a half.

It is evident that sales experienced a 74.2% rise in 2021, bringing the total number of green cars to more than 31,220. An increase of 13,293 units was seen compared to the previous year.

Mike Hawes, the Chief Executive of SMMT, noted that when it comes to vehicles, the color we choose can reflect our personality as drivers. In today's market, there are many customisable options to make sure the car matches our personal style.

From the plethora of makes, models, powertrains, wheel trims, and in-car tech that the market offers, selecting the ideal paint color is an exhilarating choice to make.

For those who want their car to distinguish itself, a vast selection of colors throughout the spectrum can be chosen to fit any personality. Despite this, the most favored hues remain unaltered for 2022.
